Ann Dawson Rainbow Talk, early years, children, language development, talk,

Hello - and thanks for dropping in!

Hundreds of teachers and child care providers took part in on-line Rainbow Talk training for Sheffield LA over the last two years.

Now Rainbow Talk is taking off across the country.

Since leaving my post as Assistant Head and Foundation Stage leader in July 2019, I have been developing Rainbow Talk into a comprehensive and highly effective tool for engaging children in talk.

Rainbow Talk:

  • Is fun and engages children in discussion, questioning, reflection, critical listening and thinking more deeply
  • Works with children of all ages and is easily integrated into existing curricula.
  • Is collaborative and inclusive
  • Builds confidence and raises self-esteem
  • Develops a deeper engagement with reading and writing
  • Broadens and deepens children’s vocabulary
  • Is effective with children with EAL and SLCN
  • Supports families in communicating more effectively
  • Has been shown to be very effective in helping both children and adults to talk through their experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rainbow Talk is being widely used with pre-school children, Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 and is now used effectively in Key Stage 2. Apprentices, NQTs as well as teachers with years of practice behind them have found Rainbow Talk inspiring and refreshing.

Social Care professionals have also found the training useful and innovative.

I want to see children enjoying language to communicate their thoughts, ideas and feelings with increasing confidence, and who are experiencing rich and meaningful interactions with those around them every day.

I want to see parents who are confident in the part they play in developing their own and their children's talk, and who enjoy happy and positive interactions with their children every day.

We want to see all those who work with children being freed up to re-discover their passion, and to be confident and equipped to empower the children in their care so they enjoy language by using it to express themselves to the fullest every day.
